Pakistan Government orders block of Twitter

The Pakistan Government has ordered a block to social network Twitter, reports Reuters. The Pakistan Government is claiming that certain “blasphemous content” has been posted on Twitter hence until it has completely resolved the issue, Twitter will be not accessible in the entire country of Pakistan.

The move by the Pakistan Government is both shocking and disappointing, especially when one considers the fact that Pakistan is an ally of the United States and thus shouldn’t condone free speech. Blocking Twitter is denying people the right to freedom of expression, a right which is fundamental to those who advocate democracy.

Reports have yielded that the move sprung from a picture drawing competition where artists drew caricatures of an Islamic sacred figure. When the competition apparently offended some entities, the government through the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority decided to block access to Twitter access of the entire nation.

It has still unknown when will the Pakistan Government lift the block on Twitter.
