Google Doodle Today : Juan Gris’ 125th Birthday

Google doodle for today is for Juan Gris‘ 125th birthday. Born as José Victoriano (Carmelo Carlos) González-Pérez  on March 23, 1887  and died on May 11, 1927.

Juan Gris, was a Spanish painter and sculptor who lived and worked in France most of his life.  According to his Wikipedia entry, he was one of the of artists who works on Synthetic Cubism which was the second movement from Cubism.

Cubism was invented in a joint effort between artists Pablo Picasso and Braque and later joined by Juan Gris. In 1907, after Pablo and Braque’s meeting, they began working on Cubism.

According to history, the term Cubism was coined by French art critic Louis Vauxcelles when he used the term “cubism”, or “bizarre cubiques” after he saw Braque’s work. For Louis, the artworks that he saw was ”full of little cubes”, the term then quickly gained wide use although the Pablo and Braque did not initially adopt it.

Google doodle is part of their tradition of recognizing personalities or events.
